Is your best life like my dog right now – lying around, waiting…?

January 9th, 2015

You have an Epic Life. The question is, are you living it?

We have a golden retriever named Buddy. He is such an awesome dog. He is our constant companion and a vital member of our family.

My Buddy – lying around and waiting...

Do you have a dog? If so, what is he/she doing right now? I know – what an odd question for a blog on this site. But stay with me, I’m getting to the point, and it’s a good one…

I live in Wyoming, in a small mountain town, and we get out a lot. (Our family’s rule is “if our fingernails aren’t dirty, we aren’t having fun.”) This is all to say that Buddy gets out. A. Lot.

But lately I’ve been so busy at my computer and on the phone developing my business and trying to book more clients and work, that days have gone by where Buddy doesn’t get out. When this happens, Buddy’s life is pretty mediocre. Sure, I keep him company. We’re home all day together as I work. I have great intentions… But mostly – and I’m very sad to admit this – Buddy is not paid enough attention when I’m consumed by my work.

So, Buddy moves around from couch to recliner to the floor, just laying there, waiting, and hoping that his master will get her hiking shoes on and motion for him to leave the house to go out and… live.

Seeing Buddy lay there, waiting to be tended to and played with, reminds me of my Epic Life – the times when it’s with me, but I’m not living it. I hope you’re doing better than I am this week! I resolve to do better by Buddy (and my epic life) next week…

Thank you for listening. I would love to hear your thoughts and get some comments and conversation going about this. 🙂

P.S. Happy New Year Shelli! Since I’ve taken a little break from Facebook, it was a pleasure to have your Epic Life update come through on my e-mail at work today. I am lucky down here in South Florida to have access year round to many outdoor activities, especially the beautiful trails right here where I work. Yesterday, while I ran, I viewed an otter on the side of the trail, Often, I spot gators, bobcat, and deer. Love reading all your inspirational posts and adventures. You keep us all motivated. I’ve watched a couple of the documentaries you have suggested on your FB page. Check out Desert Runners. Follows 4 amateur runners who attempt 4 desert ultra marathons over the course of one year (Grand Slam). Let me know what you think. Cheers to continued happiness and new adventures!

Donna, thank you for the kind words and for contributing. It’s awesome to hear you’re getting out and seeing and noticing nature’s rewards! Thanks, also, for the documentary recommendation. Adding it to our queue now. Thanks again and happy new year with love, Shelli

The trick might be to stay off the couch, “Buddy”! If you’re on the couch or recliner it feels sooo comfortable-and comfort is the enemy. Stay on the floor, nip at Shelli’s heels and toes, retrieve her hat and gloves for her, put on your saddest, most desperate golden retriever face-you know it will work, works for me every time.
    Love,
    Your GR friend, “Jack”

  • Shelli says:

Dear Sharon, your comment is lovely, funny – and perfect! It describes perfectly the “nagging” and “nipping at the heels” that our Epic Life does when we’re not living or honoring it. Maybe if we were to view our Epic Life as our Jack, or our Buddy, as this post suggests, and your comment does an even better job and illustrating the power in doing so, then we’ll do a better job of not ignoring it? 🙂
Thank you for your comment. As usual, you provide more food for thought… Great stuff, Sharon. love, Shelli

Love this thread Shelli. Roxy von Foxy just gave me the “Buddy eyes” from her dog bed. Time to get off the computer and have some fun.
