Would You Rather…
October 15th, 2012
have your life, or the life of someone else?
All three of our sons have us mostly laughing or thinking. The boys often lead our family in this game they call “Would you rather…?”
Because they’re young boys (ages 12, 10 and five), this game usually goes something like this: “Would you rather eat a fresh cow eyeball, the middle of a warm rattlesnake or the back half of a dead mouse?” It’s gross and funny — and entertaining.
Last Friday, on the way to school, Finis (Fin), our 5-year-old son, took a more serious stand, when he asked the question that is the topic of this blog post: “Would you rather have your life, or the life of someone else?”
I am thankful that each of our boys responded that they would prefer to have their own life. The question provided quite an interesting conversation over dinner that evening, and provided a good teaching moment for their parents.
It is a good question, though, right? Because although we have the freedom and ability to design and create the life we want, it is easy to sometimes get sucked into making choices and experiencing a life that is largely based on what others will think, or expect us to do. The result can be that for a day, several days, weeks, months, or even years at a time, we live a life that meets everyone’s expectations but our own.
On this day, how would you answer Fin’s question?

I’d rather have MY LIFE for sure! I can steer my life in any direction I CHOOSE rather than have someone else make my decisions for me. Your FIN is a mighty fine boy Shelli. Smart beyond his years!!
Wow! LOOOOOOVVVVVVEE this! What a great question…and really, there is only one answer. Fin’s got it totally right on. Kids hold so many of the answers to life’s big questions. It’s a great reminder to me to open up and always listen to what the younger generation has to teach us. Thanks for sharing!
I LOVE my life as it is! I have the flexibility to try new things and either discard them (not the memory!) or implement them into my life! Not sure someone elses life would allow that flexibility! I will have to ask my 10 year old this question tonight and see where it goes!!
Shelli,
OMG! It’s gonna get real with you! I love it! And, more please! Also, to answer your question: Yes! I have often thought I would like to live someone else’s life. Everyone else seems to have it more together, a better marriage, more…, more…, more…
Then, reality hits me and a mom emails me today to thank me for “…getting young minds ready for planting.” I am humbled and grateful both for her kind words and thoughts; especially on a day when I am overwhelmed by all the busyness in my life.
I am grateful for the life I have!
Namaste,
R
I think I might like to have Fin’s life!!
I feel truly blessed and happy with my life .
